We are excited to present Aftonstjärnan (The Evening Star), a stunning landscape painting by Swedish artist Gottfrid Kallstenius. The view is taken from the eastern point of Tättö, with Källvik visible in the distance. The soft evening light and the delicate shimmer of the evening star in the sky create an enchanting and peaceful atmosphere.

Since 1902, Kallstenius and his family spent their summers in the seaside resort of Källvik, located in the Tjust archipelago, north of Västervik. In 1904, the family built their home and studio near Djupsundet, the inlet to Loftahammar, directly across from Tättö. Much of Kallstenius’ work during this time features the surrounding landscapes, capturing the beauty of the Swedish archipelago.

The Evening Star exemplifies Kallstenius' ability to blend light and shadow to evoke a tranquil and reflective mood. His use of natural elements, such as the trees in the foreground and the still waters, draws viewers into the serene moment he so masterfully depicts. We are pleased to present Månskära, a captivating landscape painting by the Swedish artist Gottfrid Kallstenius. The view is taken from the artist's own property in Källvik, located by the Djupsundet strait, the inlet to Loftahammar. The tranquil scene captures the artist’s deep connection with the archipelago, particularly the area around Tättö, where he spent many summers with his family.

From 1902 onward, Kallstenius and his family began spending their summers in Källvik, a seaside resort in the Tjust archipelago, north of Västervik. In 1904, they built their home along with an atelier, allowing Kallstenius to immerse himself in the beauty of the Swedish landscape. Born in Härnösand, Johansson drew much of his inspiration from the vast and peaceful sceneries of Norrland. The artwork showcases his skill in capturing the natural light and atmosphere, a hallmark of his work. His technique involves soft, sweeping brushstrokes and a delicate palette that highlights the tranquil greenery and expansive water views typical of the Norrland region.

Johansson was a versatile artist, having also painted landscapes from places like France, Tenerife, and Italy. However, his heart often returned to Norrland, earning him the nickname "The Painter of Norrland." The sunlight in his paintings is almost always positioned at a 30-degree angle from the north-northwest, giving a consistent sense of time and place in his works.

His artistic potential was first noticed by Conny Burman, his drawing teacher at Klara elementary school, and he was later mentored by Edvard Perséus during his high school years. He began formal art training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1882, under the guidance of Perséus and Per Daniel Holm. In 1885, he joined the group of artists known as the "Opponents," which led to his departure from the Academy. This group sought to challenge the established norms in Swedish art.

Johansson’s works are appreciated for their gentle realism and deep connection to the landscapes of northern Sweden. His pieces are part of several esteemed collections, including those at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, and the municipal collection of Hudiksvall.

Wahlgren's journey into the world of art began in his youth, where he studied drawing and painting under the guidance of the academic drawing master Axel Hjalmar Lindqvist in Lund. His passion for art continued during his time at the Forest Institute, where he received artistic training from Anders Kallenberg.

In 1891, Wahlgren took a significant detour from his studies in forestry to explore the artistic scenes in Brittany and Paris. There, he studied among Swedish painters and at a Scandinavian art school led by Richard Hall. He later became a close friend and student of the renowned artist Bruno Liljefors, whose influence is evident in Wahlgren's works.

Wahlgren's artistic output, though secondary to his career in forestry, was substantial. His oeuvre primarily consists of forest landscapes, often featuring soaring birds, rendered in a style reminiscent of Liljefors' works, as well as detailed animal studies. He was a frequent participant in exhibitions organized by the Swedish Artists' Association in Stockholm, Malmö, and the Gothenburg Art Association, and held a solo exhibition in Malmö in 1914. The painting has recently spent a few months with our conservator. During this time, she meticulously cleaned the artwork and retouched a few minor areas where the paint had flaked. She also stabilized the paint and applied a new varnish. As a result, the painting is now in a very good condition. Additionally, it comes with a new, gilded gold frame that enhances its overall presentation.

He was a prominent Swedish painter, watercolorist, and etcher, and served as a professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Bergström's artistic journey included studies at the Academy from 1887 to 1891, where he was awarded the Royal Medal in his final year. He further honed his skills in France between 1894 and 1895.

The interplay of colors and the intensity of the clouds create a striking contrast, conveying the raw beauty of nature.

The artist:
Georg Stoopendaal was born on December 13, 1866, in Jönköping and passed away on January 27, 1953, in Björketorp Parish, Älvsborg County. An autodidact, Stoopendaal did not receive formal artistic training but developed his craft independently. He is renowned for his landscape paintings from Bohuslän and still lifes. His works are held in high regard and are part of the collections at the National Museum and the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

The Stoopendaal family has a rich artistic heritage. Georg and his wife Anna, also a painter, moved to Hindås in 1921 and were active there for many years. Their son Wilhelm, known as "Mosse," followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a celebrated nature painter. The family also includes notable artists like Jenny Nyström, married to Georg's brother Daniel, and Ferdinand Stoopendaal, Georg's other brother.

Georg Stoopendaal's paintings of working horses are particularly sought after. Additionally, he was a skilled illustrator, contributing to several books and documenting American indigenous peoples during his time in the United States.

From an early age, Hernlund showed artistic talent, creating cityscapes of Eksjö as early as 1850. His formal art education included studies in Stockholm under the guidance of Per Daniel Holm and further refinement of his skills in European art centers like Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, and Munich.

Hernlund's primary residence was in Stockholm, though he often traveled to capture the diverse and picturesque Swedish countryside. His works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was elected a member in 1887. Beyond his painting career, he contributed as an illustrator for notable works such as "Svenska folksägner" by Herman Hofberg and "Vårt land" by Gustaf Fahlcrantz.

Hernlund’s art is well-represented in several prestigious collections, including the Nationalmuseum, Kalmar Museum, and the Linköping Art Museum.

Axel Fahlcrantz (September 5, 1851 - November 14, 1925) was a celebrated Swedish landscape painter, hailing from a family with deep artistic roots. His father, Christian Eric Fahlcrantz, was a bishop and writer, and his uncles were both prominent in the arts: Carl Johan Fahlcrantz was a landscape painter, and Axel Magnus Fahlcrantz was a sculptor and court carver. His brother, Carl Johan Fahlcrantz, was a notable book publisher who founded the Fahlcrantz & Co publishing house in 1877.
Fahlcrantz initially pursued studies to become a sculptor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1874 to 1876 but later shifted his focus to landscape painting under the mentorship of Per Daniel Holm and Edvard Perséus. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Free Arts in 1907, reflecting his significant contributions to Swedish art.

Fahlcrantz is renowned for his landscapes that often feature water and express the dramatic effects of weather. His paintings are distinguished by their atmospheric qualities, often depicting scenes of mist, twilight, and moonlight. Victor Jernbergh (1882-1963) was a Swedish artist, draftsman, and graphic designer. Born on April 28, 1882, in Eskilstuna, he was the son of Carl Johan Jernbergh and Fredrika Karolina Carlström. Jernbergh's artistic journey began with studies at the Technical School in Stockholm (1902-1903), followed by advanced training in drawing and lithography in Berlin (1904-1906). He further honed his skills under the tutelage of Carl Wilhelmson from 1913 to 1915 and studied etching with Axel Tallberg from 1915 to 1917.

Throughout his career, Jernbergh exhibited widely across Sweden, showcasing his work in cities such as Eskilstuna, Gävle, Nyköping, and at the prestigious Konstnärshuset in Stockholm. He participated in numerous group exhibitions with the Graphic Society and the Original Woodcut Association and was featured in the Swedish Art exhibition at Valand in Gothenburg.

Jernbergh's oeuvre includes landscapes from Norrland and Spain, rendered in oil, pastels and watercolour, as well as rustic scenes depicted through woodcuts. As an illustrator, he contributed to several fairy tale books. His public works include an altarpiece for Jukkasjärvi Church and a baptism chapel in Nyköping. His graphic works are part of the collections at the National Museum, the Eskilstuna Art Museum, and the Östersund Museum.

The Artist: 

Axel Olson, born on October 22, 1899, in Halmstad, Sweden, was a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist. He was an influential member of the Halmstad Group, a collective known for its contribution to surrealist and modernist art in Sweden. Olson's artistic journey began in 1915 when he co-founded the group "Gnistan" with his brother Erik Olson and cousin Waldemar Lorentzon. He made his exhibition debut in Halmstad in 1919, which led to a significant connection with Gösta Adrian-Nilsson.

In the early 1920s, Olson traveled across Italy and Germany to refine his craft, eventually settling in Berlin in 1923 to study under the avant-garde sculptor Alexander Archipenko. His time in Berlin exposed him to the leading movements of the European avant-garde, including Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism.

Upon returning to Halmstad in 1924, Olson founded and taught at the "De unga" group with Sven Jonson and Esaias Thorén. He also worked as a commercial artist to support himself. By 1929, he had co-founded the Halmstad Group, which played a pivotal role in the Swedish surrealist movement. Olson’s works during the 1930s increasingly embraced surrealism, often drawing from everyday scenes and incorporating recurring motifs such as plows and anchors.

Throughout his career, Olson participated in numerous significant exhibitions, including one in London in 1937. The onset of World War II profoundly impacted his work, resulting in notable pieces like "Hamn" and "Svart kväll" (1940). In the 1940s, he joined the Söndrum Colony, a collective of artists that included Sven X Erixson and other members of the Halmstad Group.

In 1948, Olson visited Paris, where he encountered non-figurative French art, influencing his style towards a lighter palette during the early 1950s. Despite suffering from a severe eye condition in the 1970s, he continued to create, producing works inspired by the coastal landscapes of Halland.

His works are represented in institutions such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Hallands Konstmuseum, Norrköpings Konstmuseum.

Upon returning to Sweden, Ture Ander married Ragnhild Franzén, a former student of the Fjæstad sisters. The couple eventually settled in Orrhöjda by Lake Racken in Värmland. Despite these hardships, Ture continued to paint, while Ragnhild supplemented their income by gathering berries and mushrooms, and Ture himself turned to hunting and fishing.

The later years of Ture Ander's life were marked by profound sorrow following the prolonged illness and subsequent death of his beloved wife, Ragnhild. This period of personal grief is reflected in the somber tones and introspective mood of his later works.

He honed his skills at the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1890 to 1896 and further advanced his techniques in etching during 1895-1896 under the guidance of Axel Tallberg. In addition to his studies, Abrahamsson worked as an engraver for the Swedish Postal Service starting in 1891, a position that influenced his meticulous attention to detail.

Though his life was tragically cut short at the age of 35, Abrahamsson was celebrated for his promising career as a graphic artist. His oeuvre, albeit limited due to his untimely death, includes finely executed plates featuring evocative landscapes.

Born in Sundsvall to a builder and a painter, Gunne’s artistic path was influenced by his family’s creative background.

He pursued his academic studies at Uppsala University and also served as an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, his passion for art soon led him to Nationalmuseum, where he became a dedicated curator. From 1932 to 1937, he managed the museum's collection of modern paintings and sculptures, playing a crucial role in promoting contemporary art.

Gunne was instrumental in organizing several notable exhibitions, including those in Paris in 1927 and 1929. His expertise and dedication extended to compiling a comprehensive catalog of Nationalmuseum's painting collection in 1936. His artistic oeuvre includes vibrant cityscapes of Uppsala and Stockholm, as well as distinguished portraits of prominent figures like King Gustaf V and Jussi Björling.

Carl Gunne’s legacy endures in several prestigious collections, including Nationalmuseum, Waldemarsudde, and museums in Helsinki, Antwerp, and Budapest.
