Alfred Bergström (1869 - 1930) was a Swedish artist and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He studied both in Sweden and France, in Sweden at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he also won a Royal Medal. Berström is best known for his landscapes. Actually, he was a teacher in landscape painting at the Art Academy in Stockholm from 1898–1901. One year later, he painted this landscape, "Sunset over the Fields". Here we see his impressive talent in painting sunsets with warm colours and a three-dimensionality in the composition; this kind of atmospheric feeling is what he is best known for in his landscapes. Bergström was impressed by the french impressionist movement, and in this landscape, we can see his way of being inspired by the movement. We see a harvest field in the foreground and a lake with water reflections from the sky at sunset. We haven't been able to find where it's painted; most likely, it's from the countryside close to Stockholm. Nationalmuseum Stockholm has a similar painting from the same year, 1902, called "Sommarkväll".
