The talented artist Edmund Bristow lived and worked for his whole life in his hometown of Windsor. His farming life paintings were generally on a small scale, displaying high attention to detail. Princess Elizabeth patronized him and William IV and others; he was an eccentric man of independent spirit and worked only when the spirit moved him and not to order. In 1809 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and was an occasional exhibitor there until 1838. Today, his most sought-after paintings usually depict monkeys, horses, and cats. Horses grazing by a stream demonstrating the best of his brilliance.
