A painting by the American/British artist George Turland Goosey depicting a View of Venice. Turland started his carrier as an architect in America. To name a few of his creations, he designed some of the early skyscrapers, "the famous Friars Club, the theatrical centre of America's capital", and no less than seven Roman Catholic churches. Turland was also an accomplished etcher - his print Moonlight on a Venetian Canal winning first prize in the annual exhibition in New York in 1914. In 1921, however, he decided to try his hand at painting and returned to England, where he settled in the art colony at St Ives, Cornwall. In addition to continuing his etching, he developed an impressionistic style in oils, and his paintings of boats in St Ives harbour have won many admirers. Confusingly for collectors, however, by the late 1920s, he had reverted to using his original surname of Turland.
In 1924 Show Day at St Ives, his principal picture was of Venice with old Adriatic boats anchored against the wall of a Doge's palace. Another was a view of the Rialto Curio shop at the foot of the Rialto bridge and a smaller depiction of the Grand Canal. Turland played an active role in the theatricals at the St Ives Arts Club, and was invited to join STISA in 1928. Our painting is likely from 1925-1930; what we see is the city of Venice in distance, A blue greenish water with many different kinds of boats, painted with confident brush strokes with many areas with a layer of impasto. In the 1930s, Turland decided to go back to America, and he settled down in Laguna Beach, California.
