This rare early landscape by Carl Johansson was painted in 1886 when the artist was just 23 years old—only a year after he joined the Opponents, a group of progressive Swedish artists who challenged the traditional teachings of the Royal Academy.
The scene depicts a tranquil northern Swedish landscape, though the exact location remains unidentified. Born in Härnösand, Johansson frequently drew inspiration from the landscapes of Norrland, capturing its expansive views and atmospheric light. His compositions were meticulously crafted, always painted with the sun positioned at 30 degrees north-northwest, a signature precision that remained throughout his career.
Trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Johansson initially worked in a detailed and traditional style, as seen in this work, before gradually adopting a more impressionistic approach after encountering the art of Monet and Pissarro. His later works became known for their distinctive ultramarine tonality, earning him the nickname Ultramarin-Johansson.
Johansson gained international recognition, participating in major exhibitions such as the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1889), the Buenos Aires Centennial Exhibition (1910), and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915). Today, his works are held in the collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, and Hudiksvall Municipality.
