Carl Oscar Borg was born in 1879 in Grinstad, Sweden, and immigrated to the United States at the turn of the century. Settling in California, he rose to prominence as a painter of the American West, becoming particularly known for his respectful depictions of Hopi and Navajo life and for his dramatic renderings of the region’s natural wonders. A multifaceted figure, Borg also worked as a film art director in early Hollywood and was a founding member of the California Art Club. He exhibited widely and is represented in major American museum collections.
