Essay:
Presented here is a distinctive landscape by the Swiss artist Ernst Suter, a creator primarily known for his sculptural works, making this painting a noteworthy and rare acquisition.

Ernst Suter's upbringing in Basel's bourgeois society was marked by an early display of rebellious spirit, leading to his departure from canton school due to his involvement in a student uprising. He honed his artistic prowess under the tutelage of the renowned sculptor Jakob Probst, with whom he fostered a lifelong camaraderie. Suter's quest for artistic mastery propelled him to the cultural epicenter of Paris in 1923, where he studied under eminent sculptors such as Henri Bouchard and later, Paul Landowsky. His educational journey was enriched by attendance at the acclaimed Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, further refining his sculptural technique.

A pivotal apprenticeship with Aristide Maillol in Marly-le-Roi spanned two years, post which Suter established his own studio. During this period, he mingled with notable figures like Wilhelm Gimmi and frequented the company of John Friedrich Vuilleumier, often crossing paths with the artistic virtuoso Charles Häusermann.

Suter's return to Basel in 1934 marked a new chapter in his life, and by 1939, he had embraced a union with his second wife, Anna Ernst, a medical doctor. The subsequent years saw him settle in Aarau, where he embraced family life from 1946 onwards.

In the annals of 20th-century Swiss art, Ernst Suter is lauded as a paramount figure among the traditionalist sculptors, sharing the limelight with Eduard Spörri. His contributions to the public spaces of Aargau, particularly Aarau, are significant, and his collaborations with Basel architect Rudolf Christ left a tangible legacy. Suter's influence extended to his mentorship of aspiring artists, notably Hans Geissberger and Hugo Weber, who carried the torch of his sculptural vision. This painting, therefore, represents not just Suter's foray into the realm of canvas and color, but also a piece of Swiss art history, woven from the threads of his multifaceted career.

Erik Jerken, born June 17, 1898, in Stockholm, died October 27, 1947, in Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter, graphic artist, illustrator known under the signature Jerke.

Jerken studied at the Technical School 1916–1918, Althin's painting school 1918 and the Academy of Fine Arts 1918–1923. In addition to decoration work for Högalid Church, Stockholm City Hall and the Concert Hall in Stockholm, he performed landscapes and suburban motifs in decorative composition and church colour scheme. He often painted in thin transparent brushstrokes and is best known for his modernist still lifes and landscape paintings.

Jerken is represented at the National Museum Stockholm, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Göteborgs konstmuseum, Waldemarsudde and Västerås konstmuseum, Länsmuseet Gävleborg.

Edward Rosenberg (1858-1934) Swedish

Edward Rosenberg is best known for his landscape paintings with winter motifs around Lake Mälaren. He studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm 1879–1882. And he had his first success in 1882 when he received the Royal Medal for the painting "Ekskog i middagsbelysning".

Then he moved to Paris and joined the colony of painters called Carolles on the Normandy coast. At the salon in Paris, where he exhibited several times after 1883, he received an honourable mention in 1886 for Vårvinter, a motif from the Stockholm area. His painting "Marskväll" was shown in Munich in 1901 and became his greatest international success. 

Rosenberg is represented at, among others, the National Museum in Stockholm and the Norrköping Art Museum.

Barely fifteen years old, Dick Beer became an orphan and came to Sweden in 1907. Already in 1908-1909, he started at Althin's painting school in Stockholm. And later, at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1910-1912. His teachers were, among others, Gustaf Cederström, Oscar Björk and Alfred Bergström. 

At this time, Many artists went to Paris, and Dick Beer wasn't an exception; he rented a studio and took every spare time to visit academies such as Colarossi and Grande Chaumière and André Lhote. 

Dick Beer travels to Pont Aven in Brittany over the summer of 1913. In September, he went directly to Stockholm for his first solo exhibition with the French title Exposition des tableaux de Bretagne et autour de Paris; The exhibition was a big success with many visitors. 

1914-1917: First World War:

In the spring of 1914, Dick Beer undertook a longer study trip to Italy, Tunisia, Morocco and Spain.

When the French army mobilized, Dick Beer volunteered and was accepted into the French Foreign Legion. He was severely injured at Souain in September 1915, and the war injuries left him with severe deafness and nerve problems, which became increasingly noticeable over the years. During and after the war, he painted in a post-impressionistic style with a light palette, increasingly tuned in blue and green.

1918-1919

Dick Beer and Ruth Öhrling married in February, and in December, their only child, John, was born. During these years, Beer had a studio at Rådmansgatan in Stockholm. During this time, he paints several large Cubist compositions such as "In the Paddock" and "Arab Café". 

He participated in the Februarigruppen exhibition at Liljevalch's in 1919. His palette turned into a darker colour scheme dominated by green, blue, and red. 

Amedeo Modigliani made a portrait of him in Paris in 1919. 

Throughout his short life, Beer spent most of his time in France and exhibited almost annually in Paris.

The Scandinavian motifs were mostly landscapes around Lake Mälaren and from the Stockholm archipelago, cityscapes, many nude studies and some portraits. 

Dick Beer practised many styles during his 30 years as an artist, from post-impressionism, cubism, late cubism, expressionism and naturalism.

From the beginning of 1913, Dick Beer travels in France and paints in towns and in the countryside. He was inspired by the impressionists, who painted their immediate impressions, that which the eye fastens on in the open air. Dick Beer often depicted nature; studies of trees, shrubbery, vistas or natural phenomena. Other motifs include streets lined with houses. The human figures are often relegated to the background. The vistas are predominantly represented in a range of clear colours in which the motif is accentuated by sharp contours. Here, Dick Beer has also garnered ideas from artists who challenged traditional impressionism, such as Paul Cézanne who, with his geometric landscapes, was a precursor of the cubists. Landscapes by Vincent van Gogh are also discernible in, for example, “Stormy weather in St. Arnoult”. Dick Beer was also influenced by pointillist painting, in which the motifs were constructed by juxtaposed dots of pure paint.

Cubistic vision:
In the period following the First World War, the artist’s painting underwent a fundamental transformation. Dick Beer was influenced by various modernistic expressions. In Paris, the first wave of cubism, led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, was established. It was a controversial artistic style. There was a heated debate about cubism, in which the artist broke up the motif into smaller components, sometimes called facets, in order to rebuild it on the flat surface of the pictorial plane. This manner of painting represented a complete break with preceding pictorial conventions and naturalistic painting.

Cubism was governed by theory, not practice, and critics claimed that the style was too intellectual for the general public and they predicted that it would disappear and that artists would return to a rather more classic expression.

The theories surrounding cubism and its various expressions opened up for a number of reinterpretations in the 1910s. Dick Beer was well aware of the cubist discussions. He embraced the ideas but created a varied, personal and emotive cubism in the years around 1918. His painting was often an explosive discharge with playful characteristics and a futuristic dynamism which accentuated the painting’s inherent speed and movement, as for example his works “Dancer” and “The Toy Box”. He also experimented with geometric compositions of buildings and landscapes, which were reminiscent of Paul Cézanne’s more cubic landscapes. Here, Beer’s colours were often muted, in blue, brown and red hues. He frequently returned to earlier motifs and reworked his canvases into a cubist style, as in “Dancer tying her shoes” and “Seated dancer“.

Contemporary art critics were appalled and Beer had to endure severe criticism. At one point, the artist published a reply in the daily Politiken, 1919, where he described his view on art:

“... because love for and understanding of art, ‘l’art pour l’art’, is not easy to achieve, and neither is it easy to comprehend the different movements’ or schools’ origin, goals, characteristic endeavours, etc. – These international phenomena require not only theoretical and art historical knowledge but (...) the ability to empathise with and feel for art, as its practitioners do”.

Carl Johansson (1863-1944) Sweden

Carl Johansson began his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1882, where he had Edvard Perséus and Per Daniel Holm as teachers. He joined the Opponents in 1885, which meant that he was forced to leave the academy. Johansson made study trips to France in 1891–1892, Tenerife in 1894 and Italy in 1901 and 1914, also participated in the World's Fair in Paris in 1889, the anniversary exhibition in Buenos Aires in 1910 and San Francisco in 1915. Johansson started by painting small, neatly painted landscape paintings in a traditional style, but after he came into contact with the art of the French artists Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, his paintings became more impressionistic. He worked with clear and cold colours, with a factual analysis of the photography and where the vegetation appeared more markedly. In his older days, he used a noticeable blue tone in his paintings, giving him the nickname Ultramarin-Johansson. Since he took most of his motifs from Norrland, he also got the epithet Norrlandsmålaren (The Northern Painter).

Bengt Nordenberg (1822-1902) Swedish

Bengt Nordenberg, born April 22, 1822 in Blekinge, Sweden and died December 18, 1902 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He is counted among the Düsseldorf school and is best known for his pictures of folklife with motifs taken from Sweden. Nordenberg has also depicted the life of the middle class and upper classes and painted church paintings and altarpieces. His paintings are represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, the Norrköping Art Museum and the Gothenburg Art Museum.
Nordenberg grew up in poverty and became an apprentice to a painter in Sölvesborg. In 1843 he was able to realize his desire to come to Stockholm and study at the Academy of Fine Arts.
This painting was probably patined during this period, around 1846, which shows early proof of his talent for painting landscapes.
In 1851, he went to Düsseldorf, where Theodor Hildebrandt and then Adolf Tidemand became his teacher.
In 1856 Nordenberg received a travel scholarship from the Swedish state and travelled to Paris, Düsseldorf and Rome. However, after Rome, he soon returned to Düsseldorf, where he settled for the rest of his life.

A magnificent Winter Landscape by the Swedish artist Anton Genberg (1862-1939).
In this painting from 1912, we see the characteristic features that made him so famous.
Like the earlier impressionism movement became famous for their understanding of depicting what they see and not what one expects; as an example, we imagine snow as white, but the snow changes colour in an extensive colour scale.
Genberg took the impressionism ideas and further developed them.
This painting has a wide spectrum of colours: the snow is purple, blue, pink, and the sky glows in red, yellow, purple and blue in the evening light.
A small spring river flows through the winter landscape with bold and fast brushstrokes similar to Edvard Munch's technique in painting.
This unique, exceptional painting comes with a gorgeous golden frame.

Alfred Wahlberg (1834-1906)

Alfred Wahlberg was a Swedish landscape painter active in Germany, France and Sweden.
In his early career, he lived in Dusseldorf and took some impressions from his teacher, the Norwegian painter Hans Frederik Gude.
Wahlberg moved to Paris in 1861 and came in contact with the french impressionism movement, and that was the time when Wahlberg transitioned from the Düsseldorf technique to the more modern french way of painting.
Wahlberg's had some success and won medals at the Paris Saloon in 1870 and 1872 and a first-class award at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris.
One of his most famous paintings is "Fiskläge vid bohuslänska kusten, 1869" who later sold to Swedish King Charles XV.
Our painting is also from the west coast of Sweden, likely from Fiskebäckskil or Fjällbacka. It's painted with spontaneous brush strokes with bright colours; here we also see Wahlberg's impressive talent in capturing a summer day with a rocky coast with a cloudy sky and the water with many colours and a wind mill. A great piece by Alfred Wahlberg.

Abraham and the Sacrifice of His Son Isaac “Das Opfer des Abraham”

According to the Old Testament, God put Abraham’s faith to the test by commanding him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Just in the nick of time, an angel of the Lord appeared, forestalling the terrible deed and delivering Abraham from his despair.

Is known to me in the original. After thorough examination of this painting, I am convinced that it was painted by the Flemish painter Adriaen van Stalbemt.
The state of preservation of this painting can be described as very good.
Adriaen van Stalbemt, next to Jan Brueghel the Younger probably the most important successor of Jan Brueghel the Elder, took up many of Brueghel's themes and developed them further. Like many of his contemporaries, Stalbemt followed the example of this great role model. At the age of 29 he converted to the Catholic faith. It goes without saying that a painter in Antwerp had to be familiar with the themes of the Christian religion, since it was necessary to fulfill the wishes of his customers. The design of the spatial composition, reminiscent of the early David Vinckboons, which features juxtaposed landscape sections - on the left the dark foreground, on the right the background illuminated by the sun - indicates that this is an early painting, painted during the period from 1605 to 1610. In this painting, Stalbemt reveals himself to be a great artist who was able to skillfully combine different landscape formations such as forest, river and mountains at an early stage of his career. In interlacing all of these landscape parts into one perspective, this composition is very typical of Adriaen van Stalbemt's work.

Carl Albert Liedbeck, was born in 1881 in Värmland, Sweden, and died in 1955 in Stockholm.
Liedbeck was a Swedish painter and conservator. He was married to Esther Bachman.
After studying art in Stockholm and a few years in Paris, he worked as a painter and conservator.
He had solo exhibitions in Karlstad, Gothenburg and Linköping in 1942 and in Malmö in 1943.
His art consists of portraits, still lifes and landscapes.
