Bengt Nordenberg, born April 22, 1822 in Blekinge, Sweden and died December 18, 1902 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He is counted among the Düsseldorf school and is best known for his pictures of folklife with motifs taken from Sweden. Nordenberg has also depicted the life of the middle class and upper classes and painted church paintings and altarpieces. His paintings are represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, the Norrköping Art Museum and the Gothenburg Art Museum. Nordenberg grew up in poverty and became an apprentice to a painter in Sölvesborg. In 1843 he was able to realize his desire to come to Stockholm and study at the Academy of Fine Arts. This painting was probably patined during this period, around 1846, which shows early proof of his talent for painting landscapes. In 1851, he went to Düsseldorf, where Theodor Hildebrandt and then Adolf Tidemand became his teacher. In 1856 Nordenberg received a travel scholarship from the Swedish state and travelled to Paris, Düsseldorf and Rome. However, after Rome, he soon returned to Düsseldorf, where he settled for the rest of his life.
