Essay:
This exquisite drawing by Christian Wilhelm Eckersberg, dated April 1806, was created during his formative years at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the esteemed Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard. The work exemplifies Eckersberg’s early exploration of the nude—a subject that would remain a central theme throughout his career. The delicate composition, rendered in black ink and grey wash, reflects the influence of Abildgaard while showcasing the young artist’s emerging talent for capturing both form and emotion.
