Essay:
We are pleased to offer this beautiful small painting by Carl Ferdinand Hernlund (1837–1902), a Swedish artist and illustrator celebrated for his poetic depictions of the landscapes of Småland, Kalmar, Kolmården, and the Östgöta plains.
Hernlund demonstrated artistic talent from an early age, painting city views of Eksjö as early as 1850. He pursued studies in landscape painting under Per Daniel Holm in Stockholm and further refined his skills during extended stays in Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, and Munich. Throughout his career, he participated in several exhibitions at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and was elected a member in 1887. He also worked as an illustrator, contributing to publications such as Herman Hofberg’s Svenska folksägner (1882) and Gustaf Edvard Fahlcrantz’s Vårt land (1888).
This particular painting captures an open landscape at sunset, where the clouds glow in fiery orange and red hues against a darkening sky. With expressive brushwork and masterful use of color, Hernlund brings to life the fleeting beauty of twilight.
Today, his works can be found in several important collections, including Nationalmuseum, the Royal Collections, Kalmar Museum, Linköping Art Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, and Jönköping County Museum.
