Essay:
"Vinterväg" captures the serene beauty of a snow-covered landscape near Korsnäs forest in Dalarna, Sweden. Painted in 1917, this large-scale work is a testament to Schultzberg’s mastery of plein air technique. His delicate, spontaneous brushstrokes bring life to the snowy path, while the forest glows in soft purple tones under the fading afternoon light.
The location depicted in the painting, Korsnäs near Falun, was a frequent source of inspiration for Schultzberg, resulting in numerous captivating works. A photograph from 1886 shows the artist working outdoors, reflecting his dedication to painting on location, regardless of the canvas size.
Schultzberg’s career began with studies at the Technical School and under Edvard Perséus in Stockholm (1881), followed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (1882–1886). His "Höstlandskap" (Autumn Landscape) won him the royal medal in 1886, paving the way for international recognition. As a stipend recipient, he traveled extensively, spending time in France, Italy, and Corsica.
While Schultzberg explored international subjects, his Swedish landscapes, particularly the vibrant, sunlit winter scenes from Dalarna, remain his hallmark. His achievements earned him medals in Paris (1889), Chicago (1893), and at the 1904 World's Fair in Saint Louis. A member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1900, Schultzberg also served as commissioner for Swedish art exhibitions at world fairs, including San Francisco (1915) and Rome (1911).
Schultzberg’s works are held in major Swedish museums, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Göteborgs konstmuseum, and the Kalmar konstmuseum.
