This small yet luminous winter landscape by Hugo Carlberg captures the fleeting light of the evening sun as it sinks behind the forest. Painted in 1920, Evening Sun exemplifies Carlberg’s distinctive sensitivity to natural light, especially in the transitional seasons. With expressive, almost impressionistic brushwork, he renders the snowy terrain bathed in soft purples, pinks, and icy blues—contrasted by the fiery hues of the sky beyond the silhouetted trees.
Carl David Hugo Carlberg was born in Eksjö in 1880 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and later in Paris. He is best known for his depictions of Småland’s landscapes, often painted en plein air, with a particular focus on the light and atmosphere of late winter and early spring. In addition to oils, he developed a personal technique in watercolour, creating expressive landscape studies in a “mixed” medium of his own invention. Carlberg is represented in the collection of the Kalmar Art Museum.
