oil on canvas signed and dated Harryan -42 canvas dimensions 16.14 x 12.99 inches (41 x 33 cm) frame 20.07 x 16.92 inches (51 x 43 cm)
Karl Alfred Harry Harryan was born in 1895 in Stockholm. He was the son of the shoemaker Johan Alfred Andersson and Gabriella Kristina (Elin) Karlsson and from 1933 married to Karin Olbers. Harryan studied at the Technical School in Stockholm 1909-1912 and for Carl Wilhelmson 1912-1915 and also made study trips to Paris and England. In Paris, Harryan came in contact with the art of Cézanne and Manet and took a lot of inspiration from the impressionist style. We can see a great example of his way of painting in this "Still Life With Flowers in a Vase" from 1942; it has a thick layer of impasto with confident brushstrokes against a grey/white background. It is a remarkable painting by him with so many fine details. Harryan is represented at the Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Modernamuseet Stockholm, Gripsholm Castle, Nyköping Art Museum and Eskilstuna Art Museum.
