Essay:
We are pleased to offer an exquisite small painting by the Swedish artist Per Sundberg (1887–1968). Measuring only 14.5 x 18.6 cm, this delicate plein air study captures the afternoon light filtering through a stand of birch trees, reflecting beautifully on the snow. Likely painted around 1920, it exemplifies Sundberg’s mastery in rendering atmospheric effects with a spontaneous, impressionistic touch.
Sundberg was a painter, draftsman, and printmaker. He studied at Althins Målarskola in Stockholm (1907–1908) and later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1908–1912), with additional training in lithography under Emil Johanson-Thor. His work was exhibited widely, including at Konstnärshuset and Hultberg’s Art Gallery in Stockholm. His refined, intimate landscapes are represented in the collections of the Moderna Museet, Västerås Art Museum, and Landskrona Museum, among others.
This luminous winter scene is a fine example of Sundberg’s ability to distill nature’s fleeting moments into a work of remarkable charm and sensitivity.
